NFL refs continue to be the Saints’ worst nightmare.
During the NFC Championship rematch between the Saints and Rams on Sunday, New Orleans defensive lineman Trey Hendrickson in the second quarter stripped quarterback Jared Goff of the ball, which was then scooped up by Cameron Jordan and returned 87 yards for a touchdown.
But the Saints’ celebration was cut short when it was determined an official blew his whistle mid-play after incorrectly determining the play was dead due to an incomplete pass.
It was not, and the call was reversed after a New Orleans challenge. But since the whistle was blown, the Saints’ touchdown was voided and they were forced to go on offense at the spot of the fumble recovery — their own 13-yard line.
The Saints did not score on the ensuing drive, and the chaotic sequence of course was reminiscent of when the NFL refs missed a blatant pass interference call late in the NFC title game between the two teams.
The Rams ended up winning that game, which ultimately led the league to enforce replays on questionable pass interference calls.
