As Jets coach Rex Ryan readied to release his players for a week of rest and relaxation during the bye, he delivered one critical message to them: Be smart and stay out of trouble.

The Jets have been somewhat of a magnet for off-the-field issues, and Ryan wanted to drive the point home that it was crucial for everyone to stay clean of controversy during the week off.

“We try to do the professional thing, just be pros,” Ryan said. “We have a lot of great people here, but clearly you make sure that they know that there is Player Protect [security program] that is available to them and to take advantage of that.

“They know that they represent the Jets on and off the field, and I think that’s important to these guys. It is something that you remind them of. The number one thing is to be safe. I understand that sometimes you’re 5-1, people know it and just to be smart out there.”

Added veteran running back LaDainian Tomlinson: “We understand where we are and what’s at stake. Nobody wants to jeopardize what we have going. We talked about being smart and everyone taking care of themselves and kicking back and relaxing and enjoying the time off.”

Darrelle Revis
, who played the entire game in Denver, said he came out of Sunday’s game with his left hamstring in much better shape than it was after last Monday night’s game. Revis said he plans to stay in New Jersey and rehab during the bye week.

“I wish I could just snap my fingers and make [a full recovery] happen,” Revis said. “This is a long process right now for me to get there, and I’m working my butt off to get there. In due time I will be 100 percent and be ready to go.”

Ryan said, “I think he’s close right now. I thought it was an encouraging thing — the way he came out of that game I thought was big. He might not be 100 percent right now, but he’s getting closer to it.”

Ryan yesterday lauded field judge Gary Cavaletto
for having the gumption to make the pass interference call on Broncos safety Renaldo Hill
in the final minutes of Sunday’s game.

“That was a good call,” he said. “That was a professional call. It’s probably a tough call to make on the road in that kind of situation at the end of a game, but clearly you can’t make an assumption that Santonio
[Holmes
] is not going to make that catch. The guy grabs his face mask, probably the only reason why Santonio doesn’t catch the ball anyway.”

Ryan said tight end Dustin Keller
had an MRI exam on his left wrist after he hurt it Sunday. Noting that Keller finished the game, Ryan said he didn’t think it was serious.

Ryan will be in Baltimore on Saturday night to take part in a 10-year reunion of the 2000 Ravens Super Bowl team for which he was a member of the coaching staff. . . . The Jets players will return to work on Monday to begin practicing for their Oct. 31 home game against the Packers.
