Rob Gronkowski isn’t ruling out a return to the NFL this season – it just would come with a stipulation.

The former Patriots tight end hinted he’d consider playing again if the NFL allowed players to use CBD products to aid in injury recovery.

“I don’t want to be banned from playing the sport I love because I’m using a product that anyone can buy right off the shelf at their local pharmacy,” Gronkowski said at a news conference Friday, promoting a partnership between CBD Medic — for whom he is a spokesperson — and Gillette Stadium. “I’m not really sure why it’s banned.”

CBD is on the NFL’s banned substance and the league refuses to make any changes to the list without some form of concession from the players union.

When Gronkowski, 30, announced his partnership with CBD Medic two months ago, he stated it was because of the toll playing football took on his body. He spoke Friday about how the “agony” from the physical pain made it hard for him to focus during meetings. He believes the use of CBD can “help manage the pain.

“I also want to have the option to get back into the game, and if I’m banned next year I can’t,” Gronkowski said.

According to Pro Football Talk, Gronkowski’s comments are “meaningless” and he could return to the NFL in 2020 without the threat of being banning as long as he doesn’t test positive for CBD during the annual offseason drug test. Other than that, Gronkowski would be free to use it from training camp through the postseason.
