Add Rob Gronkowski’s name to the list of past players weighing in on Tom Brady’s uncertain future.
The former Patriots tight end, who hung up his cleats last March after nine seasons, spoke about Brady Tuesday in Miami, noting the six-time Super Bowl champ “deserves the opportunity” to explore what’s out there with free agency looming.
“He’s been playing for so long, and just the way that he’s been playing, the level he’s been playing at, he definitely deserves an opportunity to go out there and test the market,” Gronkowski said, according to NESN.
“You’ve never done it before in your career,” the Fox Sports personality continued. “He’s going to be a free agent for the first time ever so good for him, go test out the market and then do what’s best for himself. That’s the decision that he has to make, what’s best for himself, what’s best for his family.”
Brady has spent his 20-year career in New England, and Patriots owner Robert Kraft — let alone the greater Boston area — has made it clear he’s not ready to see him go. Should Brady end up with another team, however, Gronkowski said it will be “strange” to see his friend in another uniform.
“It’s always strange, no matter who the player is,” Gronkowski said. “It’s always strange at first, but you know, everyone gets used to it after a little bit, but it would definitely be strange.”
Unlike Gronkowski, veteran quarterback Joe Montana advised against a late-career transition.
“Don’t — if you don’t have to,” Montana told NFL Network last week. “It’s a process to go through, and it takes time to get used to the team.”
If Brady hits the market come March, he’ll join a growing list of free-agent quarterbacks, including Philip Rivers and Marcus Mariota.
