Ryan Fitzpatrick will have a starting job, and the Dolphins will have a lot of losses. Everyone wins!
The Dolphins and the journeyman quarterback agreed on a two-year deal Sunday, according to multiple reports, and Fitzpatrick will play on his third AFC East team.
Miami already had recently dealt Ryan Tannehill, ending a mini era and beginning one that the team’s front office has signaled likely will not be successful immediately. With Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa looming as a probable top draft pick next season, the Dolphins have said they are thinking longer term than just this season.
“Basically, the thought is we’re going to look to really build this organization based on our needs and if it takes a year or so — two years, three years — we’re going to be there and we’re going to be a [winning] organization,” Dolphins owner Stephen Ross told reporters earlier this offseason.
Enter Fitzpatrick, a former Jet who played for the Buccaneers the past two seasons. Last year, the 36-year-old was the on-again, off-again starter, competing with Jameis Winston, and finished with 17 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He is a capable backup and an exciting, underwhelming starter — one whom it is very easy to lose with.
