The Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints play in the NFC wild-card round on Sunday.
The Saints, led by the dynamic combination of quarterback Drew Brees and receiver Michael Thomas, finished 13-3 and won the NFC South. The Vikings were 10-6 and earned the NFC’s second wild-card spot. Kirk Cousins had an up-and-down season at quarterback, but has weapons at his disposal with running back Dalvin Cook and receivers Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen.
It is a rematch of one of the most memorable playoff games in recent history, with the teams meeting for just the second time since the Minneapolis Miracle. That came in the Divisional Round of the 2017 postseason, when Case Keenum threw a prayer to Diggs with the Vikings trailing 24-23 with 10 seconds left in the game. Somehow, Diggs leaped, made the catch, evaded Saints cornerback Marcus Williams and ran untouched into the end zone to give the Vikings a 29-24 win as time expired.
The Saints would again be eliminated in heart-breaking fashion a year later, this time in the NFC Championship Game to the Rams. With the game tied 20-20 with under two minutes remaining, the Saints were driving inside the red zone when the referees missed a blatant pass interference on Nickell Robey-Coleman. The missed call forced the Saints to settle for a field goal instead of a new set of downs before losing in overtime. It was egregious enough to force the NFL to implement a new rule allowing coaches to challenge pass interference calls this season.
Safe to say, the Saints will be looking for some redemption this weekend. They enter the wild-card round having won three in a row and six of their last seven, narrowly missing a first-round bye. The Vikings, meanwhile, closed the regular season with two divisional losses, squandering a chance to win the NFC North and earn a first-round home game.
