It’s go time for Sam Darnold.

It took 12 weeks, but Sunday against the Dolphins the Jets quarterback is finally set to take the field with his top three wide receivers at his disposal. After sitting out the past two games with a shoulder injury, Darnold returns, setting up a six-week window that could very well determine his future in New York

“I think these guys all just want to kind of see what maybe it could have been from the beginning of the year,” coach Adam Gase said Friday. “Getting a lot of these young guys in there and seeing what kind of chemistry you have. I mean, obviously, the more we practice together, the more we’re playing games together, the better it is for those guys. I just think every day, we’re getting improvement, and Sunday is the biggest test. It’s the best way to get better and go out there and compete against another team.”

The Jets sit at 0-10 entering Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium, in the driver’s seat to earn the No. 1 pick and with it the chance to draft Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. But if Darnold is able to deliver a spark and play well enough to get the Jets in the win column, it could take them out of the running for the top pick or at least convince them not to use that pick on another quarterback.

Either way, Darnold figures to be auditioning for his future — either with the Jets or another team that could trade for him, turning up the spotlight on the third-year pro.

“I think for me, I just need to go out there and play my game,” Darnold said. “Play smart, but continue to play aggressive. I think just balancing those two, obviously there’s a fine line between playing too aggressive and playing smart. Just gotta play my game and play smart out there.”

The first time Darnold came back from his shoulder injury this season, he played just two games before aggravating it in Week 8 against the Chiefs. That robbed him of the first chance to play with a healthy Jamison Crowder, Breshad Perriman and Denzel Mims at the same time — he has played with a combination of two of them twice and none of them once in his six starts — as Joe Flacco was instead the benefactor of having all three wide receivers in the offense.

While Darnold was struggling earlier in the season, Gase often lamented not being able to have all of his top targets on the field. The Jets will still be missing rookie running back La’Mical Perine, who is on injured reserve with a high-ankle sprain, but Gase said earlier in the week that having the healthy offensive weapons around Darnold would help provide “a good evaluation of improvement.”

“Obviously those guys have been producing the last couple weeks, so it’s going to be nice playing with those guys,” Darnold said. “Getting to play with them in a game, it’ll be good.”

Darnold said the toughest part has been staying patient through all the rehab, but Friday after practice he said he feels “really good.” Gase said he looks stronger now than the last time he was trying to prepare for a game.

“It’s been a good week for Sam,” Gase said. “He looks, from the last time that we were going through a week, before that New England game, the way he’s throwing the football right now, you can tell there’s a big difference as far as the control, the velocity, his change of pace on throws. It just looks a lot different than the last time he tried to make a run at going to play in a game.”
