Sam Darnold threw a touchdown for the first time in 10 weeks Sunday, then did it again.

And then the embattled quarterback turned the ball over on three straight possessions in the second quarter, making the Jets’ comeback that much more difficult before they ultimately dropped a crushing 31-28 loss to the Raiders at MetLife Stadium.

Darnold rebounded in the second half and even scored his second rushing touchdown of the season before the Jets took the late lead, only to see it disappear on Henry Ruggs’ game-winning, 46-yard touchdown catch with five seconds left. But his three turnovers — one interception and two fumbles — loomed large in the tight loss.

“Obviously the turnovers hurt us,” said Darnold, who completed 14 of 23 passes for 186 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. “Just gotta take better care of the ball. When I feel pressure, get away from it or get the ball out of my hands.”

While the 28 points tied a Jets season-high, Darnold fell to 0-8 as the starting quarterback this year, with the loss bringing them one step closer to possibly drafting his successor, Trevor Lawrence.

Darnold came out strong on the opening possession, putting together a 12-play, 74-yard drive in which he converted three third downs. The last of those came on a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jamison Crowder, which was Darnold’s first touchdown pass since Week 3 against the Colts. He missed four games with a shoulder injury in between, but had gone 19 quarters without a touchdown pass before connecting with Crowder.

The duo hooked up again for a 6-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter as the Jets took a 13-7 lead, but it went south from there.

On the Jets’ following drive, Clelin Ferrell beat Mekhi Becton off the edge and strip-sacked Darnold. The next drive ended when Darnold tried to squeeze a pass to Breshad Perriman and got picked off by Trayvon Mullen. And then on the Jets’ final drive of the first half, Ferrell got to Darnold again for another strip sack, at which point the Raiders led 17-13.

“[Darnold] did some good stuff,” coach Adam Gase said. “I’m sure when we go back and watch it, we can clean a few things up, put ourselves in a better position. … It was unfortunate we had the two sack-fumbles. The pick we definitely can clean up.”

After two three-and-outs to begin the second half, Darnold came back to lead a scoring drive capped off by his 4-yard touchdown run and hit Denzel Mims for the two-point conversion to close within 24-21. Ty Johnson later capped off a big rushing day with a 1-yard touchdown to put the Jets up 28-24 before it all fell apart.

“We have no choice, we gotta move on,” Darnold said. “We gotta learn from it and continue to get better. I really feel like this group is getting better as the season goes on. We just gotta continue to do that.”
