As if the talent gap between the Giants and Eagles wasn’t already big enough, imagine taking away Saquon Barkley from the underdogs.
Barkley is expected to play barring a setback, a source told The Post, but that worst-case scenario still looms as a possibility for Sunday after the running back was limited in Friday’s practice and listed as questionable on the final injury report (neck).
“It’s Week 14, his neck is a little sore, so put him on the injury report,” head coach Brian Daboll said. “I think it’s just a long season.”
Barkley took the first snaps during position drills and avoided the red no-contact jersey during the viewing portion of practice. But Daboll, who made it sound like Barkley’s injury was a result of the cumulative toll and not a mid-week practice incident, wouldn’t fully commit to his star in the lineup when asked before practice.
“Hope so,” Daboll said. “Probably have to see.”
Saquon Barkley at Giants practice on Dec. 8, 2022. Charles Wenzelberg / New York PostHow big of a swing is Barkley’s availability? His 1,296 yards from scrimmage account for 31 percent of the Giants’ season total.
Barkley is one of three Giants on the injury report with a neck injury, but Daboll wrote off that trend as a coincidence.
DT Leonard Williams (neck) is in danger of missing games with a second different injury this season. The former iron man missed three with a knee injury earlier in the season and is doubtful Sunday against the Eagles.
Offensive guards Josh Ezeudu (neck) and Shane Lemieux (toe), and CB Adoree’ Jackson (knee) will not play.
CBs Darnay Holmes (shoulder) and Nick McCloud (hamstring), WR Richie James (knee) and DL Henry Mondeaux (knee) were upgraded to full participants after limitations earlier in the week.
DT Justin Ellis, who had his first career solo sack last week, said it was a “very emotional” moment.
The 6-foot-2, 334-pound Ellis is in his ninth NFL season. He primarily is used in rush situations but dragged down Taylor Heinicke for an eight-yard loss on second-and-5 on a drive that ended with a punt on fourth-and-1.
Ellis, 31, had a half-sack in five seasons with the Raiders and none in three with the Ravens. His role expanded when the Giants lost starter Nick Williams to a season-ending injury on Oct. 30.
The Giants could get help on the offensive line Saturday by activating Ben Bredeson, who started the first seven games of the season at left guard. Coincidence or not, but the rushing numbers began to dip when Bredeson went to injured reserve with a knee injury.
Bredeson must be activated before the Week 16 game against the Vikings or shut down for the season.
“He’s improved, so more optimistic than last week,” Daboll said, “but not 100 percent.”
Daboll was asked in a joking manner why NFL teams bother to practice if quarterback Baker Mayfield can jump in and lead the Rams to a comeback victory just two days after joining the team as a waiver-wire pickup.
“Valid question,” Daboll deadpanned.
