A tequila-infused phone call by Rams head coach Sean McVay ultimately put the team on a path to Super Bowl glory.
In a new profile for ESPN, McVay divulged new details about his widely known run-in with quarterback Matthew Stafford in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, which later resulted in the Rams trading for the longtime Lions signal-caller. As the 36-year-old head coach revealed, he was “a few tequilas in” when he called Rams brass over FaceTime to champion for Stafford, who wanted out of Detroit.
“Here’s the f–king deal, OK? We can sit here and exist, and be OK winning nine to 11 games, and losing in the f–king divisional round and feel like, ‘Oh, everything’s OK.’ Or, we could let our motherf–king nuts hang, and go trade for this f–king quarterback, and give ourselves a chance to go win a f–king world championship. You ready to f–king do this or what?” McVay recalled of the conversation, which drew laughs from Rams staffers on the other end of the phone.

Getty ImagesAt the time, McVay was in a dark place following the Rams’ divisional round ouster to the Packers during the 2020 playoffs. Fortunately for him, he received no pushback from the organization in regard to Stafford, who landed in Los Angeles in January 2021.
As part of the trade package, the Rams sent two first-round picks, a third-round selection, and quarterback Jared Goff to Detroit. Though Goff, a former first-overall pick, helped lead the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance in 2019, he struggled in what would be his final two seasons in Los Angeles, which caused his relationship with McVay to deteriorate.
At the time, McVay coached Goff harder but it instead appeared to fracture the quarterback’s confidence as a result.

The Rams will open the season at home on Sept. 8 against the Bills.
