Speculation that Sean Payton would leave New Orleans for Dallas can be put to rest.
Payton and the Saints agreed to a five-year contract extension, according to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, keeping the head coach with the same team he’s been with since 2006. The extension will begin next season and locks Payton up through the 2024 season, per CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora.
Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett is in the final year of his contract. Payton, who led the Saints to a Super Bowl XLIV victory for the franchise’s first championship, was an assistant on Bill Parcells’ Cowboys staff from 2003-05.
In a recent NFL.com story, Payton, 55, spoke about his connection to New Orleans.
“This is home,” Payton told the website. “I have a house here. I’m here full-time. Every year, we do more (to upgrade the training facility).”
In a way, Payton seemed to appreciate the constant rumors he’d eventually jump ship to work for Jerry Jones.
“I think if [the speculation] ends, it means no one’s paying attention, and you’re not winning,” Payton said.
