T.J. Watt might have suffered a serious injury on Sunday.
As he came off the field during the Steelers’ opener against the Bengals, Watt pointed to his arm and was caught on camera, where he appeared to say, “I tore my pec.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter later reported that the Steelers think Watt did in fact tear his pectoral muscle. The three-time All-Pro, 27, is scheduled to have scans Monday, according to Schefter.
The normal recovery time for a torn pectoral muscle is three to four months. Watt’s brother, J.J., tore his pec in 2019 and missed eight games before returning for the Texans’ first-round playoff game.
Watt, the defensive player of the year in 2021, is coming off his second straight season leading the league in both sacks and tackles for loss, and had already notched a sack and an interception against Cincinnati when he got hurt.
Watt went to the locker room after getting hurt and did not return to the game, which went into overtime. The Steelers ultimately topped the Bengals, 23-20.
