Odell Beckham Jr. remains a free agent for now, but one person thinks his services are desperately needed by an AFC power.
Stephen A. Smith said on ESPN’s “First Take” that he believes the Kansas City Chiefs need Beckham to win the Super Bowl this season.
“I felt that way since they lost Tyreek Hill,” Smith said Thursday. “When you have a breakaway threat the way Tyreek Hill was, obviously Odell is not on that level but he can be something spectacular when he got his wheels available to him.”
This isn’t out of the blue. The Chiefs have apparently shown interest in Beckham, who is expected to be available later this season after recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in the Rams’ Super Bowl victory in February.
Odell Beckham Jr. remains a free agent for now. Getty ImagesKansas City has restructured its deal with tight end Travis Kelce to create cap space, according to Pro Football Talk, and analyst Chris Simms said he’s heard the Chiefs might make a run at Beckham. Kelce supported the idea himself on the New Heights podcast he hosts with his brother Jason.
“I want them to come true,” Kelce said of the rumors. “I haven’t heard anything. I have not heard anything in the locker room or anything around the facility. But I think that something’s in the air for sure. And if it means OBJ . . . alright now.”
While the Chiefs’ offense is putting up similar numbers to what it did last season, Smith says they’re missing a key component: A deep threat.
“I personally believe anytime you’ve got a deep threat like that, obviously it’s more difficult to stack the line of scrimmage against the run, it’s certainly difficult to key in on a tight end like Travis Kelce,” Smith said. “I also think that Travis Kelce speaking on it says that he knows what’s needed if they’re going to beat them brothers in Buffalo when it’s really really time.”
Last Sunday, the Chiefs lost at home to the Bills for the second year in a row during the regular season. Buffalo is the current favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.
Stephen A. Smith and Dan Orlovsky debate on ESPN’s First Take. ESPNThe Chiefs, however, have had the Bills’ number in the playoffs, eliminating them in each of the last two seasons, although both of those games were in Kansas City.
The Chiefs will travel to San Francisco to play the 49ers on Sunday in a rematch of the 2020 Super Bowl, which the Chiefs won 31-20.
