Perhaps Kyle Shanahan is saving his timeouts for the offseason.

The 49ers had a chance to go into halftime of Super Bowl 2020 with a lead, but instead Shanahan opted for the overly conservative route and settled for the 10-10 tie with the Chiefs at the break.

After stopping the Chiefs on third down, the 49ers could have called a timeout with about one minute and 30 seconds left in the second quarter. Even 49ers general manager John Lynch was seen in up in his box motioning for a timeout — San Francisco had all three available — but his head coach did not oblige.

Instead, they let the clock run all the way to the Chiefs’ punt and took over at their own 25-yard line with 59 seconds left. Then Shanahan called back-to-back runs before the Chiefs called a timeout with 19 seconds left. The 49ers then connected for a 20-yard pass and nearly got into scoring territory with a Jimmy Garoppolo completion to George Kittle, but it was wiped out by a highly controversial offensive pass interference.

The 49ers and Chiefs went into the half tied at 10 with the 49ers set to receive the ball to start the third quarter.
