The game was long over by this point but the Saints added an exclamation point with a 44-yard touchdown run by Taysom Hill with just over a minute left in the game.
The play made the Jets’ defense look inept as the Saints were just trying to run out the clock and instead they pushed the score to 30-9, the sixth time the Jets have allowed 30 points or more this season.
It looked like some Jets might have expected Hill to just run into the line on third-and-12 to keep the clock moving. Instead, the Saints motioned Alvin Kamara to the right and Hill ran around the left end basically untouched on his way to the end zone.
“If there’s time on the clock and the ball is snapped, we’ve got to be playing 100 miles per hour and guys have to be rallying to make that play,” Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins said. “At the end of the day, we just can’t give that up. It just looks bad. We can’t give that up. Guys have to continue to play through everything and continue to lock in as long as that clock doesn’t have zero on it.”
Taysom Hill went nearly untouched during his late 44-yard touchdown run. Getty ImagesHill admitted he should have slid to run the clock out instead of scoring but he saw nothing but open space in front of him when he rounded the corner. Jets safety Ashtyn Davis looked like he took a terrible angle and cornerback Bryce Hall was eaten up by a block.
“Once Kamara motioned out of the box, we didn’t have anybody stacking the box, pretty much having an extra player for that quarterback run,” linebacker C.J. Mosley said. “On a quarterback run, there’s an extra hole in the box. He can really find any free lane to run. Kudos to him for making the right call and unfortunately getting a big play at the end.”
The Jets were down to two healthy running backs after Austin Walter woke up with a non-COVID illness. The Jets tried to get him ready to play, but he could not. That left Ty Johnson and La’Mical Perine as the only healthy running backs along with fullback Nick Bawden. Tevin Coleman was inactive after suffering a concussion last week and Michael Carter (ankle) is on injured reserve. … DE Ronnie Blair also had a non-COVID illiness and was inactive for the game after being elevated on Saturday from the practice squad.
