Deshaun Watson is now under police investigation in the latest twist to allegations of sexual assault that have been leveled against him in recent weeks.

The Houston Police Department tweeted Friday that a criminal complaint had been filed against the Texans quarterback.

“Today, a complainant filed a report with the Houston Police Department concerning Deshaun Watson,” the police said in a statement on social media. “As with any allegation, the Houston Police Department is now conducting an investigation and will not comment further during the investigation process.”

Neither what Watson is being investigated for nor who filed the report were made clear, but the 25-year-old quarterback is facing 22 civil lawsuits from massage therapists claiming sexual misconduct. It’s unknown if the report comes from a new accuser, but it is the first criminal complaint filed against Watson — something the former Clemson star’s lawyer, Rusty Hardin, said he and his client welcome.

“We welcome this long overdue development,” Hardin said in a statement to the Houston Chronicle. “Now, we will learn the identity of at least one accuser. We will fully cooperate with the Houston Police Department.”

Attorney Tony Buzbee, who represents all of the persons who have filed the civil suits, said recently his clients would not submit evidence to local law enforcement. He said in a statement on Friday that he was not personally involved in the process of filing the criminal complaint.

Buzbee also said “other criminal complaints will follow, as previously indicated, in Houston and in other jurisdictions and with other agencies.” Buzbee added that he filed civil case No. 22 on Friday and said it includes similar allegations against Watson as the ones previously filed.

Watson has denied the allegations, and 18 massage therapists who have worked with him came to his defense earlier this week.
