The “Monday Night Football” showdown between the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens was arguably the game of the year, a 47-42 shootout that featured all kinds of drama until the final seconds.

But a certain group of viewers may have walked away from the game enraged. For those who bet on the Browns, the line for the game closed at +3, with some sportsbooks even offering Browns +3.5. With seven seconds left in the game, Ravens kicker Justin Tucker kicked a field goal to put his team up 45-42, which presumably would be the final score.

Those with Browns +3 looked like they would escape with a push, while those holding a +3.5 ticket would win despite Cleveland losing the game. But there were still two seconds left on the clock. The Browns had one play, and as many teams do in that situation, they tried to throw a bunch of laterals in hopes that someone would break open down the field.

The play started inching backwards, and like watching a car crash in slow motion, Browns bettors saw the football heading into the end zone. Then, Jarvis Landry got tackled with the ball in his hands.

Safety. Two points for Baltimore. Final score, 47-42.

Miami Miracle aside, something good rarely happens when you start trying to lateral in the closing seconds of a game. Especially for bettors. It’s hard to imagine a worse beat happening in the NFL this season.
