MINNEAPOLIS — The third-coldest game in NFL history was a summertime walk in the park for Bud Grant.
The 88-year-old former Vikings coach sent the crowd at arctic TCF Bank Stadium into a tizzy by walking out for the coin toss for Sunday’s NFC wild-card playoff with the Seahawks wearing a short-sleeve golf shirt and no coat.
The temperature was minus 6 (minus 21 with the wind chill) at the time.
“Would you hold my jacket while I go out for the toss and show how we love this weather?” Grant, who coached the Vikings to four Super Bowl trips from 1967-85, reportedly told an NFL staff member.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll — a former Grant assistant — enjoyed the display.
“It was really fun just to see him out there,” Carroll said. “And I loved the way the crowd responded [to his short sleeves] and gave him love.”
