Two quarterbacks are making headlines this week, and for once this offseason, they are not named Tom Brady.
After 18 seasons in the league, veteran Saints quarterback Drew Brees is “genuinely and seriously considering retirement,” according to ProFootball Talk.
“It’s not a given that I’m coming back every year,” the 41-year old Brees told NFL Network’s Jane Slater leading up to the Pro Bowl. “But when that time comes, I’ll always be a Saint.”
While Brees remains uncertain about his future, the Saints have a plan in mind. They want Brees to return for one season to be used in a transition role to pass the torch to backup Taysom Hill, whom they believe to be their next franchise quarterback. This thinking could potentially lead Teddy Bridgewater, the Saints’ more traditional backup quarterback, to testing the free-agency market.
“[The Saints] do have their quarterback of the future on the roster, too — that quarterback will be Taysom Hill,” Fox’s Jay Glazer said on “The Herd” on Monday. “Taysom, they believe is a franchise quarterback, and especially you’ve seen what Lamar Jackson has been able to do, so they think they have him here.”
Hill sparked a lot of excitement, especially toward the end of the season by showcasing his versatility as a runner and a passer. The Saints have used him all over the field, from tight end to special teams player. During the Saints’ Nov. 29 victory over the Falcons, Hill blocked a punt to set up a 3-yard touchdown catch, then later scored on a 30-yard run.

The 29-year old utility player from BYU was originally signed by the Green Bay Packers in 2017 as an undrafted free agent. He was claimed off waivers by the Saints shortly after.
Notably absent from the Saints’ quarterback conversation is Bridgewater, who has been with the team since 2018 and is set to become a free agent come March. The 27-year old won all five games this season when filling in for Brees, who suffered a thumb injury on his throwing hand on Sep. 15 against the Rams. He was the Vikings’ starter before suffering a serious knee injury during the 2016 preseason that sidelined him for 19 months.

Glazer also told “The Herd” on Monday that the Chargers had “moved on” from long-time starter, Philip Rivers.
Chargers general manager Tom Telesco previously told Sirius XM that there were “a lot of moving parts” in regards to Rivers’ future with the team, which finished with a 5-11 record in the basement of the AFC West.
“I think he still has plenty of good snaps in him but like I said, he’s a free agent,” Telesco said.
How the organization feels about Rivers might be immaterial. The 38-year old veteran already moved his wife and nine children from San Diego to Florida earlier this month, immediately igniting rumors that he was done with the Chargers and could be headed to Tampa.
“What this means football wise is to be determined but it was time for us to move back closer to home,” Rivers said in a text, according to Chris Mortensen.
The Chargers own the sixth pick in the 2020 NFL Draft behind two quarterback-needy teams, the Bengals and Dolphins.
Rivers is among a crowded quarterback free-agent class that could include Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton, Marcus Mariota, Ryan Tannehill, Brees, Bridgewater and Brady.
