Mike McCarthy wasn’t afraid to exaggerate a bit when it came to landing his dream job.
During Wednesday’s introductory press conference, the Cowboys’ new head coach was asked about the interview process, particularly his comment about watching every play from the Dallas Cowboys’ 2019 season. McCarthy soon fessed up that that wasn’t the case.
“Well, I need to confess, I told [team owner] Jerry [Jones] I watched every play of the 2019 season, but I wanted the job,” McCarthy said. “I haven’t watched every play of the season. You do what you gotta do, right?”
McCarthy, who was fired from the Packers in December 2018, analyzed NFL trends from game tape in his year away from coaching. On Monday, he became Dallas’ ninth head coach in franchise history after the team parted ways with Jason Garrett, which Jones also addressed Wednesday.
“We all wanted this to have a very nice, if possible under the circumstances, soft landing,” Jones said of Garrett, who ended his nine-plus years in Dallas with an 85-67 record.
Garrett was initially linked to the Giants’ head coaching vacancy, filled Tuesday by Patriots special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach Joe Judge.
