Tom Brady brought out the heavy artillery in his Dad Jokes arsenal.
Falcons defensive end Grady Jarrett was flagged for a dubious roughing the passer call on a sack of Brady on Sunday. The call ended any hope of an Atlanta comeback. Brady was asked about the situation by Jim Gray on his SiriusXM podcast, “Let’s Go!“
“It was a long unwelcome hug from Grady. He was in the backfield all day,” Brady said. “As I said after the game, I don’t throw flags. What I do throw is tablets. I didn’t have one accessible at that time. He had a hell of a game. I’ll leave it at that.”
Brady was asked if he agreed with the assessment from NBC’s Peter King that the call was a result of heightened awareness of quarterback safety after the Tua Tagovailoa concussion controversy.
“I think that there’s always at times like this such a heightened awareness of different things that are being called. Everyone saw the Tua situation and I’m sure all the medical departments across the league were called, and there were meetings and so forth,” Brady said. “They’re trying to keep those things from happening again. No one knows the full details of that situation. I know they came out with something last week that they throughout went through it and the league made a statement.”
Tom Brady had jokes about the roughing the passer penalty called against Grady Jarrett. Getty ImagesBrady said the way rules are enforced differs “from crew to crew” and you hope the calls don’t impact the game — and that the refs presumably feel that way too.
Gray delved into the stats of how many roughing the passer calls Brady has drawn: The QB drew one last season, and none in 2019. He ranks 16th in the NFL in roughing the passer penalties drawn since 2020. He’s allegedly drawn roughing the passer calls on a number equal to 2.1 percent of the times he’s been sacked, which is not high relative to others — with him ranking 61st out of 91 quarterbacks who have been sacked 100+ times.
“Because I’m a pocket passer, a lot of those roughing the passers come with guys extending plays which I don’t really do,” Brady said. “So that doesn’t surprise me I’m down on the list. I’d love to be up there a little bit higher and get some 15-yard penalties for my team, but it’s not always the case, unfortunately.”
Tom Brady warms up for Tampa’s game against Atlanta. Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesBrady talked about how the fundamentals of the game have changed, and that while there are more freak athletes than ever — he named Micah Parsons and Aaron Donald and said there were myriad wide receivers who fit this build — the physicality is down.
“The game has definitely changed from a physical standpoint — you look at the concussion situation. We look at boxing or MMA and they show highlights of people getting knocked out all the time. When it comes to another contact sport like football, you can’t imagine that a concussion takes place. There’s almost this aspect that we as players — no one wants to get hurt, but we know what we’re showing up for. We know that we’re gonna do the best we can to prepare our body for the contact,” he said.
“The game has definitely changed from a very physical, demanding game to a less physical, demanding game, and more of a skills competition.”
