In September, after Cowboys backup quarterback Cooper Rush led Dallas to a win over the Cincinnati Bengals, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he would “walk to New York” for a QB controversy.
If the Cowboys can knock off the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles Sunday night, Jones might need a new pair of walking shoes.
In Troy Aikman’s weekly interview with 96.7’s The Ticket in Dallas, Thursday, the Cowboys great said if Dallas can beat the Eagles, the team should consider whether it’s worth putting Dak Prescott, nearing return from a fractured thumb, back into the lineup.
Cooper Rush has found a groove as the Cowboys starter. AP Photo“Considering what they’ve been able to do and how they’ve been winning games with Cooper Rush, I think that becomes a real question the organization has to answer,” he said.
Aikman referenced his own experience in 1991 when backup quarterback Steve Beuerlein won the last five games of the regular season and coach Jimmy Johnson stuck with him in the postseason rather than going back to Aikman, who had become healthy.
The Cowboys won the opening game of the playoffs against the Bears that postseason before falling to Detroit in the divisional round.
Dak Prescott’s position as the Cowboys’ incumbent QB may be in jeopardy. AP PhotoIn his four starts this season, Rush has averaged 194 yards and one touchdown per game while throwing no interceptions and a completion rate of 62%.
A win over the Eagles would be Rush’s most impressive as a starter. Heading into a crazy atmosphere at Lincoln Financial Field in a primetime game and walking out with a win while handing a rival its first loss of the season would certainly give the Cowboys at least something to think about when Dak Prescott can return to play.
