Tua Tagovailoa is expected to make his return on Sunday for the Dolphins.

Coach Mike McDaniel said on Monday that the team is designating Tagovailoa to return from IR after missing the past four games with a concussion.

McDaniel said the intention was for Tagovailoa to play on Sunday, though the quarterback still has to pass concussion protocols.

According to ESPN. Tagovailoa has not had concussion symptoms for weeks.

“Our plan is to start him practicing on Wednesday, and the clearing doesn’t come until after some of the activity,” McDaniel said, per USA Today. “But we’re obviously doing so in the hope of everything going well so he can play Sunday, but that will be to be determined.”

The decision to put him or IR, and automatically sideline him for four weeks, was a safety measure to keep him from rushing back.

There was a push from some former players for Tagovailoa to retire after he was laid out on the turf with a scary head injury in a Sept. 12 loss to the Bills.

Tagovalioa, 26, has had a history of head injuries and missed a part of the 2022 season after a devastating hit against the Bengals.

The Dolphins lost three of four games without Tagovailoa with the only win coming against the lowly Patriots.

Skylar Thompson, Tyler Huntley and Tim Boyle have all seen time.

Huntley and Thompson also suffered injuries, which forced Boyle into action on Sunday in a 16-10 loss to Colts.

It is unclear who will be Tagovailoa’s backup on Sunday.

“To be determined,” McDaniel said. “Information still needs to be gathered… there’s still stuff that needs to go on with the evaluation process, and I’ll make my determination on that alongside the coaching staff.”

The Dolphins had one of the most dynamic offenses in the NFL last season as they made the playoffs for a second straight year.

However, Tagovailoa will now have to rally the team from a 2-4 start if they want to reach the postseason again.
