Dolphins star Tyreek Hill was detained by police Sunday morning due to a driving violation while he was trying to get to Hard Rock Stadium for Miami’s Week 1 opener against the Jaguars, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.
The shocking moment — which brought flashbacks to the incident earlier this year involving Scottie Scheffler at the U.S. Open — was captured by passersby and showed Hill on the ground on his stomach being handcuffed by police. Another video showed Hill upright in handcuffs with an officer moving aggressively toward him.
Hill told reporters after the game that he had “no idea” why police had put him in handcuffs and called the situation “crazy.”
“I wasn’t disrespectful because my mom didn’t raise me that way,” Hill said. “I didn’t cuss. I did none of that. I’m still trying to figure it out.”
Hill responded, “Yeah,” when a reporter asked him if an officer put hands on him while he was handcuffed and added that the whole situation occurred with such quickness that “it caught me off guard.”
ESPN reported Hill was cited for reckless driving after speeding and got into a verbal altercation with police after they stopped him. Hill was released after being cited. Hill was not sure if the officers were aware of who he was.

Calais Campbell and Jonnu Smith had been at the scene and were detained while trying to help Hill.
The NFL star played in the Dolphins’ 20-14 Week 1 win over the Jaguars and scored an 80-yard touchdown in the third quarter to help Miami pull within three of Jacksonville.
Hill took the moment to bring some levity to the situation by celebrating the TD by placing his hands behind his back in a handcuffed position, while teammate Jaylen Waddle came up and unlocked the imaginary handcuffs.
But the encounter with authorities did not sit well with Hill’s agent, who told NFL Network in an interview it had been “very upsetting” to see how his client had been treated.
“It’s unnecessary. There’s no reason Tyreek should’ve been treated that way,” Rosenhaus said during the television interview inside Hard Rock Stadium after the incident.
The Miami-Dade Police Department said it was conducting an “immediate review” into Hill’s detainment, including a review of body-cam footage.

Daniels later said an internal affairs investigation was being initiated and one officer involved has been placed on “administrative duties.”
“I’m committed to transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers,” Daniels said in a statement.
The Dolphins receiver was not aware one of the officers had been put on administrative leave until he was asked about it after the game and said, “That should tell you everything you need to know.”
Rosenhaus indicated they would be talking to legal representation over a situation he described as “absurd” and one that “got way out of hand.”

McDaniel said he was “proud” of the players who stopped and added that Campbell and Smith had been “pretty rattled” over the incident.
Hill expressed his thanks to them for being there for him.
“I’m just glad that my teammates were there to support me in that situation because I felt alone,” Hill said. “When they showed, it made me realize that we got a f–-king good team this year. For them to put their life on the line, it was amazing to see.”
Hill finished the game with seven catches for 130 yards and one touchdown amid a chaotic day for the wide receiver and the Dolphins.
