After all the preseason talk of organizational tanking, after all the recent rumblings that Broadway Baker Mayfield and the Jets were a match made in fire-and-brimstone heaven, there is every possibility that even though they didn’t Suck as much as everyone expected them to, the Jets managed to suck enough.

Suck For Sam enough.

If the Browns pass on Darnold and take Josh Allen with the first-overall pick, if the Giants pass on Darnold and take Saquon Barkley with the second pick, then Mike Maccagnan’s bold move from 6 to 3 would deliver Darnold to the Jets as … Broadway Sam.

In which case it would behoove Giants GM Dave Gettleman to immediately send out whispers he is strongly considering Darnold, even if he isn’t, if for no other reason than to bait Maccagnan into trading up to 2. If the genie isn’t already out of the bottle, given Gettleman’s obsession with a gold jacket player whom most everyone believes Barkley to be.

Mayfield would be the kind of leader who could flourish in Jeremy Bates’ system and benefit from having Josh McCown as a mentor, and his raging swagger would play well alongside Jamal Adams and Leonard Williams.

Darnold, for his part, has prototypical size and no baggage.

Mayfield has distanced himself from the Johnny Manziel comparisons, and some look at his accuracy and moxie and view him as the best of the Quarterback Class of 2018. Others favor Darnold. Others favor pro-ready Josh Rosen. Others favor the big-armed but inaccurate Allen.

Mayfield seems better equipped to start earlier than Darnold, but there would be no urgency for Todd Bowles to start Darnold with McCown in place.

The payoff in 2019 would be enormous with the right coaching to correct Darnold’s elongated throwing motion and propensity to fumble and unleash his immense gifts.

There is an opinion emerging through all the dense smokescreens that Darnold is the only quarterback Gettleman is considering.

Darnold, mellow in an Eli Manning kind of way, fits the conservative Giants’ mold more than a rabble-rouser like Mayfield.

Mayfield is a rebel with a cause in a Broadway Joe Namath kind of way, and Maccagnan doesn’t seem to worry about him being 6-foot-1/2, much less his crotch-grabbing and singular late-night arrest.

Maccagnan is in the sweet spot here. Even if Darnold is gone, Broadway Baker is a nice fallback option for him. This isn’t crossing your fingers and hoping, then praying, that Christian Hackenberg justifies you gambling on his promise. What you see with Mayfield is what you get. And what you get is a gamer.

But no one a year ago was talking about Suck For Baker.

Darnold, after visiting East Rutherford, made an 11th-hour visit to Florham Park on Wednesday.

The Jets have finished last in the league in luck for a long, long time.

Luck For Sam.
