The Seattle Seahawks have had a tough offseason. Franchise quarterback Russell Wilson is unhappy, and was nearly traded to the Bears before Pete Carroll intervened. Star cornerback Shaquil Griffin left for the Jaguars, and linebacker KJ Wright may leave as well.
Another loss was defensive tackle Jarran Reed, who went on to sign a one-year deal with the Chiefs. The Seahawks reportedly wanted to restructure his deal, but the two sides couldn’t agree, and he was released.
Now, there are some interesting details coming out surrounding the release. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Reed apparently would have made more money if he had agreed to the restructure with the Seahawks – the deal would have paid him $8 million in 2021. However, he wasn’t “feeling the love” in Seattle – so opted to become a free agent.
Reed’s gamble on himself ended up not being a great one, as he signed a one-year deal worth $5 million. But he was aware that he wouldn’t make as much on the open market.

Getty Images“His agent explained it to him fully and said, ‘You are going to lose millions of dollars here,'” Garafolo said. “[Reed] said, ‘I don’t care, because I want to go to a place where I feel the love back to me instead of some other people.’ So, he willingly gave up millions of dollars to go to the Chiefs to play there and reset his value.”
The Chiefs are obviously an ideal destination, but this is certainly not a good look for the Seahawks, who already had a below-average defense in 2020. The team also only has three picks to work with in April’s draft.
