DETROIT – The Jets dropped their preseason opener 26-17 to the Lions, answering very few of the questions that surround this team.
Here’s a look at the Jets winners and losers from last night’s game:
WINNERS
SANJAY LAL – The Jets wide receivers coach has a difficult job. He has a lot of inexperienced players he must bring along, and they played pretty well last night. Jeremy Kerley found holes in the Lions defense. Stephen Hill caught a couple passes and players like Ryan Spadola and Ben Obomanu showed they deserve consideration for the roster.
Lal works extremely hard in practice. It looks like his efforts are paying off.
JAIQUAWN JARRETT – The backup safety is moving to the starting lineup this week after impressing coach Rex Ryan. Jarrett was all over the field and made an impression. Now, he gets a shot to prove he deserves the starting safety spot over Antonio Allen.
KELLEN WINSLOW – It was just one catch, but Winslow’s 24-yard grab that began the Jets’ first touchdown drive showed what he could give the Jets if he’s healthy. It was a short throw from Mark Sanchez that Winslow turned into a long gain and changed the momentum and field position. Winslow could prove to be an important late addition to this team.
LOSERS
MARK SANCHEZ – You can’t throw that interception. It’s that simple. Sanchez played well on his third and final drive but it was not enough to shake the feeling he gave Jets fans after that interception. It was Deja Boo all over again. Jets fans have seen Sanchez turn the ball over 52 times in the last two years. He did not give anyone confidence that will stop if he’s the starter.
REX RYAN – Ryan can’t say he was not watching the offense when asked for an evaluation of Geno Smith’s play. He’s the head coach, not the defensive coordinator. It makes sense for Ryan to be heavily involved with the defensive calls, but he has to be able to pay attention to the offense, too. And if he is ignoring the offense? Don’t tell the media. It just made Ryan sound like a glorified defensive coordinator, like many suspect he is.
THE O LINE – They committed too many penalties, gave up pressure and did not open holes in the running game. The starters had three penalties, two from new right guard Willie Colon. Austin Howard struggled against Willie Young and pressure from Young led to the Sanchez interception. The Jets have no depth on the line either. The second line looked terrible.
