Zach Wilson is one snap away from again quarterbacking the Jets.

Mike White is expected to start Sunday against the Lions despite the limitations caused by an unspecified rib injury, but Wilson was elevated Wednesday ahead of veteran Joe Flacco to serve as the primary backup. Wilson spent the first three games after his midseason benching as an inactive third-stringer, so will he be ready to reclaim the throne if White cannot start or is forced out of the game, as he was twice last week?

“That’s my job as a quarterback — to make sure I’m always ready to go,” Wilson said. “And to put this team in the best position possible.”

Actually, Wilson’s job was to help lift the Jets to new heights as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft. Instead it was determined that his play was holding back a playoff-caliber team. The “humbling” present situation hasn’t shaken Wilson’s confidence that he is the Jets’ future.

“I definitely believe in myself,” Wilson said. “Of course I have all the confidence in the world — and I think that’s how it should be — but you have to be able to prove that.”

The idea behind the change was to benefit the top and bottom of Wilson’s body — clear his head while correcting out-of-whack footwork.

“The biggest thing for me mentally was finding the fun in football,” Wilson said. “I love this game and it definitely wasn’t lost, but I think you [media] felt the frustrations over some of those rough games.”

Wilson returned from a season-opening three game absence (knee injury) to go 5-2 in seven starts, but the record was misleading: He completed just 55.6 percent of passes with four touchdowns and five interceptions.

“We’re in the business of developing guys,” head coach Robert Saleh said. “This is Mike White’s opportunity, and he’s attacking the heck out of the opportunity. But at the same time, we’ve got to make sure we do everything we can to develop Zach to a spot we know he’s capable of getting to.”

The struggles opened a door for White, whose toughness and team-first attitude turned him into a locker-room favorite while Wilson operated the scout team and stayed for extra throws with practice-squad receivers.

“Zach’s been doing a great job,” Saleh said. “He’s been deliberate in his approach over the last three weeks. He’s been holding himself accountable in regards to how he wants to attack practice, how he’s been performing in practice going against our defense, which I think is pretty good.”

Added Wilson, “Being able to go against those guys with unscripted looks or stuff that’s a little unfamiliar and trying to make it our own has been good for me.”

Saleh called it a “coincidence” that Wilson was promoted at the same time that White’s availability is in question. White received treatment inside the facility during the stretch and individual drills viewing periods of practice, before joining teammates for 11-on-11.

“We’re still working as if he’s playing this week,” Saleh said.

The immobile Flacco lost a fumble on a sack on one of the seven snaps he played in place of the injured White against the Bills. The decision to change the depth chart could’ve been made at that moment.

“Obviously, I’m excited because I feel like I’ve been trying to take advantage of the last couple of weeks,” Wilson said, “but the mindset and the mentality should stay the same.”

Wilson admitted it is “frustrating” watching from the bench, but credited White’s toughness and play.

“I’m trying to put myself in his position every play — the good, the bad, the ugly,” Wilson said. “He’s done a great job with being decisive, getting the ball out of his hands, and he’s been accurate.”

If White keeps winning with the Jets in a playoff race, the status quo likely won’t be disrupted. But a loss to the Lions combined with Saleh’s earlier message about getting Wilson back on the field at some point this season could create a quarterback controversy. Does Wilson expect to play again this season?

“I hope so, but that’s not up to me,” he said.” I kind of have to have short-term memory right now and … whenever that number’s called — whether it’s this year, next year — I need to attack every day as if I’m trying to get better.”

What Wilson can control is the way he handles adversity.

“It’s a learning experience, and there’s different ways to look at it,” he said. “You can sit there and be pissed off and make excuses, or you got to kind of flip the script and be like, ‘I need to improve, I need to see what [White] is doing, I need to look from a different perspective.’ ”
