DALLAS — With at least a week and a half left in his stint on long-term injured reserve, Adam Fox is accompanying the Rangers on this two-game road trip.
The 25-year-old defenseman was on the ice in a red non-contact jersey for the Blueshirts’ morning skate on Monday.
He participated in a majority of the drills and then remained on the ice afterward for extra work with scratched blueliner Connor Mackey.
“I think it’s just the next step,” head coach Peter Laviolette said of bringing Fox on the road trip before the Rangers lost to the Stars, 6-3, at American Airlines Center. “It’s a chance to work with him. We’re here, so to bring him on the road and get him some extra work off the ice and on the ice. I think that’s important in the progression.”
The uptick in Fox’s recovery regiment is a positive sign for his anticipated return on Nov. 29 against the Red Wings.
Adam Fox’s recovery is trending in the right direction for the Rangers. Corey Sipkin for the NY POSTIt’s unclear if the 2021 Norris Trophy winner will be 100 percent healthy by the time he’s eligible to come off LTIR, but the fact that he’s resumed skating with the team can only mean he’s trending in that direction.
In 10 games this season, Fox racked up three power-play goals and eight assists before his knee-on-knee collision with Carolina forward Sebastian Aho.
Defenseman Ben Harpur will miss the remainder of the 2023-24 season after undergoing pectoral surgery, according to USA Today.
The loss of Harpur is a hit to the Rangers defensive depth, which the 28-year-old was signed to a two-year, $1.575 million deal last season to bolster. Zac Jones beat out Harpur in training camp for the seventh defenseman role, but the left-handed defenseman probably would’ve gotten recalled over Mackey amid Fox’s injury if he was healthy.
In seven games this season, Harpur posted one goal and two assists.
Vincent Trocheck has quietly — but not really — built a six-game point streak for himself.
It may only seem that way because it’s been slightly overshadowed by linemate Artemi Panarin, whose franchise record 15-game point streak to start a season ended Monday night.
The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the first period off of Trocheck’s wraparound goal on the power play.
Ever since Filip Chytil landed on injured reserve this month, Trocheck has more than adequately filled in in the middle of the second line. The 30-year-old has collected four goals and seven assists since joining forces with Panarin and Alexis Lafreniere, with three of those points coming on the power play.
Barclay Goodrow scored his first goal of the season with 15.2 seconds left in regulation Monday night.
Nick Bonino also collected his first point as a Ranger with an assist on Kaapo Kakko’s 2-0 score in the second period.
The Rangers are scheduled to practice in Pittsburgh on Tuesday before they face the Penguins on Wednesday.
