Bryan Berard missed the first three games of the season while the Islanders tried to find room for him on the roster. Now Berard will be out 2-4 weeks because of a groin injury suffered Saturday against the Devils.

The 30-year-old, injury-plagued defenseman paid his own way during training camp and, when he finally did make the roster, had an immediate impact, notching four points in his first five games. Not surprisingly, his two goals came on the power play.

“Bryan has been a big part of our success this season, especially on the power play,” Ted Nolan said of Berard, who played 11 games a year ago for Columbus. “The good news is our blue line has a lot of depth, so this is an opportunity for other players to step up.”

The other good news, at least for Berard, is that the Islanders play just five games in the next three weeks, the first of which is Saturday’s match against Carolina at the Coliseum.
