It was a real-life Glass case of emotion.
Cody Glass got teary-eyed when Predators GM David Poile told him he’d be accompanying the team on its NHL Global Series Challenge trip to Bern, Switzerland, as detailed by the NHL Network’s “Behind the Glass” series.
“It’s always scary when I get called in here!” the 23-year-old told Poile and coach John Hynes when he got the news in the GM’s office. “It doesn’t stop here, I know that. It’s a good feeling.”
Glass wiped away tears as the latest twist in his pro hockey career sank in.
“It’s been in the back of my mind, and to be able to finally be told that I’m going kind of lifts a weight off my back,” Glass said. “It feels really good.”
“I worked really hard this summer,” he said with a smile, before apologizing for the reaction.
The emotion was understandable for the Canadian forward, who was the No. 6 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft — the first-ever selection made by the expansion Vegas Golden Knights.
Cody Glass is nearing a return to the NHL. Getty ImagesGlass was well on his way to meeting the high expectations set before him, making the Golden Knights’ 2019 opening night roster and scoring on his first NHL shot. He notched five goals and 12 points over 39 games as a rookie, though his first two seasons were cut short by a concussion and knee surgery — the recovery process then ran into the league’s COVID shutdown.
Vegas traded Glass to Nashville as part of a three-team deal after the 2020-21 season. A slow start to 2021-22 (one assist in eight games) saw him sent down to AHL Milwaukee.
It was with the Admirals that Glass found his game again, posting a team-leading 62 points — 14 goals and 48 assists — in 62 games.
An NHL roster spot still isn’t guaranteed. But on the brink of making it back, Glass couldn’t help but get to the brink of tears.
