The Rangers’ 3-2 win over the Capitals on Friday night in Washington did not come without controversy.

The Capitals first goal was scored at the 10:58 mark of the second period after a lengthy review from the officials, as the puck could not be seen going over the goal line by any angle immediately available to the media. After Rangers defenseman Kevin Klein swiped the puck off the goal line, Washington forward Jay Beagle batted it back towards the net and it seemingly got lost under goalie Antti Raanta.

It was originally called a no-goal on the ice, but after the review, it was was overturned and the Rangers lead was cut to 2-1. Coach Alain Vigneault then challenged on the premise of goaltender interference, but that was dismissed — possibly happening after the puck crossed the line, but not before.

“They sent us what they say, they saw the goal [and] we can’t tell,” Vigneault said immediately after the game.

Yet the NHL apparently sent its previously private video taken from the goal post to the Rangers after the game as part of their explanation. The video was later released to the media.

Not every arena in the league has cameras in the goal posts, and they’re not normally part of televised broadcasts. Apparently, they can be part of the video review process in the league office in Toronto. After watching the video, it’s clear that the puck did cross the goal line, and it was the correct call.
