The Devils Thursday asked assignment-required waivers on RW Stephen Gionta and D Olivier Magnan and are expected to return both to Albany if they clear at noon Friday.

In addition, New Jersey sent non-roster D Anssi Salmela to Albany for his first action since undergoing knee reconstruction last June.

The moves would leave the Devils with 20 healthy players for the back-to-back pair in Ottawa Friday and against Detroit in Newark Saturday.

Gionta had no points in 12 games, and was minus-3 with six penalty minutes, while Magnan, also in his NHL debut, was pointless in 18 games and minus-4 with four penalty minutes.
