MONTREAL — Now Patrik Elias owns all the Devils’ major career scoring records: assists, points, and Saturday the big one — goals.
One night after Scott Niedermayer’s No. 27 was hoisted to the rafters in Newark, Elias ensured that his No. 26 will be there, too.
“When I think of Patrik Elias, I think New Jersey Devil,” teammate Travis Zajac said after Elias scored twice, tying then breaking John MacLean’s 14-year record with his 347th and 348th goals in last night’s 5-3 victory over the coach-firing Canadiens.
“It feels good. It’s gone by quick. I remember my first one like it wasn’t that long ago,” Elias said.
He’s often overlooked among the stars, even on his own team, yet there they are, all those No. 1 numbers — 348 goals, 497 assists and 845 points for a team that has won so much, with him.
“I made a choice a while ago to [stay with] this organization, and I’m glad I did,” Elias said. “Hopefully I have a lot more in me.”
Even last night’s record-breaker was important, the game-winner to run their streak to four victories, their longest this season, and seventh triumph in eight.
“The guy’s a winner, one of the most competitive people I know,” coach Pete DeBoer said. “He’s a special player.”
Elias helped ensure that the Canadiens’ firing of Jacques Martin yesterday didn’t derail the Devils’ surge.
Elias began breaking the record by matching it with a power-play goal, back-door from Kovalchuk.
Later came Elias’ record-breaker, started when Dainius Zubrus forced the turnover that gave Elias and Sykora a 2-on-0. Sykora to Elias to Sykora to Elias, and the record was broken.
“Just a good night,” Elias said.
