Kevin Hayes and Alain Vigneault are back together again — for a few weeks, at least.

The Flyers traded for Hayes, the former Rangers center, Monday night by sending a 2019 fifth-round pick to the Jets. Hayes is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but by acquiring him now, the Flyers will have exclusive rights to negotiate a new deal with the 27-year-old until June 23.

“By gaining the rights to Kevin at this time, it provides us with an opportunity to negotiate with him prior to July 1 when he is due to become an unrestricted free agent,” Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher said in a statement.

Hayes spent the first four years of his NHL career playing under Vigneault with the Rangers, tallying 73 goals and 101 assists in 310 games. Vigneault was fired after the 2017-18 season before landing the Flyers job this April, while Hayes was traded in February to the Jets in exchange for Brendan Lemieux and a 2019 first-round pick.

The Rangers had delayed their long-term decision on Hayes last summer by signing him to a one-year, $5.175 million contract. The Boston College product made it clear he would like to stay with the Rangers in the future, but the two sides never came to an agreement on an extension, leading to February’s trade.
