Bobby Holik couldn’t skate and couldn’t exercise, so the Devils center became a bookworm while recovering from surgery to repair his shattered pinkie.

“You have to expose your mind to things that maybe aren’t your regular choices,” Holik said.

“The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger was one of his selections, “The Right Stuff” by Tom Wolfe a second, and “The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam” by former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara was another.

“I think history is so important. You really need to diversify,” said Holik.

Holik suffered a compound fracture of his pinkie when struck by a puck Oct. 17, his stick acting as the anvil that left bone breaking the skin. He finally had the pins that held the repair together and his cast removed Monday, but he probably will not return to action before December.
