The Rangers will have to pick themselves up from their malaise without one of their top defensemen.

Jacob Trouba broke his thumb in Tuesday’s 5-2 loss to the Devils and will miss four-to-six weeks, the Rangers announced Wednesday.

“Unfortunately we’re gonna miss everything [Trouba] brings, from a physicality standpoint, from a compete standpoint, what he brings to us from a leadership standpoint,” head coach David Quinn said. “He’ll be missed. But the good news is it’s not as serious as we originally thought and he’s going to be back sooner than later.”

The Rangers (4-7-3) were already reeling Wednesday, coming off their fourth straight loss with Quinn questioning their effort in Tuesday’s letdown against the Devils. But trying to snap out of their funk looks even more daunting now without the services of their most established regular defenseman.

Trouba, who had formed a strong pairing with rookie K’Andre Miller on his left, was averaging 21:40 of ice time through 14 games, the second-highest mark of all skaters behind fellow blue liner Adam Fox. After taking last season to settle into a new organization, following a trade from the Jets, the 26-year-old was looking more comfortable as a fixture on the Rangers’ blue line.

Even if Trouba misses the minimum four weeks, that could knock him out for somewhere around 14 games — one quarter of the season in the compacted 56-game schedule.

“It’s a big blow, but in this shortened season and these circumstances, every team has it,” Quinn said after practice. “So it’s just next man up.”

It appears that next man will be Brendan Smith, at least for Thursday’s game against the Flyers in Philadelphia, though Quinn said the staff was still figuring out what to do with the pairing.

Smith had played alongside Trouba on Tuesday night while filling in for Miller, who was out with his own upper-body injury. But Miller is set to return Thursday and was skating with Smith during Wednesday’s practice. Jack Johnson was also rotating in with that pair in his return from a groin strain, but Quinn said he would need a few more practices before becoming an option.

Miller, meanwhile, stepped into Trouba’s spot on the second power-play unit during Wednesday’s practice.

“It’s definitely a tough loss,” Fox said. “Injuries are part of the game, but [when] you lose one of our veteran guys on the D corps, it hurts. I think it’s an opportunity for guys to step up and fill that role.”

It’s just the latest injury for the Rangers, who played Tuesday’s game without Miller and star winger Artemi Panarin (lower body), the latter missing his second straight game. Both are expected to return to the lineup Thursday while center Filip Chytil is in the midst of his own four-to-six week recovery from an upper-body injury suffered on Jan. 24.

The Rangers’ depth on the blue line has been especially tested this season. Johnson last played on Jan. 26, four days before Tony DeAngelo played his last game for the organization after a postgame altercation with Alexandar Georgiev, which was followed by Smith getting sidelined by an upper-body injury in the next game. Anthony Bitetto and Libor Hajek have stepped up in their absences, forming a pairing for the past five games.

Now, the dependable pair of Fox and Ryan Lindgren will become even more important while Miller and Smith likely join forces behind them.

“We’ll plug [Miller] in and everybody on that D corps has just gotta play a little bit better, that’s all,” Quinn said. “It can’t be one guy. It’s got to be everybody.”
