At a time when facial hair is growing unabashedly across a shut-down country, one of hockey’s most well-known beards has disappeared.

Sharks center Joe Thornton chopped off his beard for the first time in nearly two years, the team revealed in a video, which showed the before and after, with some help from his daughter, Ayla, who channeled “I Dream of Jeannie” to show the stunning change.

The 40-year-old Thornton started growing his graybeard during the 2015-16 season as he and Sharks defenseman Brent Burns became known for their matching looks, which they dubbed “lifestyle beards.” There was one slight interruption, when Burns shaved Thornton’s beard at a team party just before the 2018 season, but Thornton had spent every day since then growing it back.

“I regretted [shaving] as soon as it started hitting the floor,” Thornton told reporters in 2018. “Hopefully it’ll grow back quickly.”

Thornton’s son was not a fan of him clean-shaven at the time.

“My 5-year-old wasn’t happy this morning when he woke up,” Thornton said. “He didn’t want to see dad, so I’ve got to make it up to him.”

With the NHL’s season on pause because of the coronavirus pandemic, Thornton has some time to start growing his beard back in. He won’t need to worry about growing one for the playoffs, though — if there are playoffs — as the Sharks were in last place in the Western Conference at the time the season was suspended.
