The free agency market has been busy since Canada Day, when the biggest news in New York was the signing of both Scott Gomez and Chris Drury to the New York Rangers.

The Blueshirts let almost all of their Unrestricted Free Agents walk. Former starting goaltender Kevin Weeks, replaced in nets by the spectacular Henrik Lundqvist, is now Martin Brodeur’s stand-in on the Devils. The Devils also picked up discarded Blueshirts defenseman Karel Rachunek.

The Islanders resigned back-up backstop Wade Dubielewicz to a one-year $500K deal, but have yet to retain any other UFAs. Viktor Kozlov and Tom Poti both went to Washington, where they’ll join former Rangers pivot Michael Nylander and superstar Alexander Ovechkin. Edmonton loaner Ryan Smith bolted the Island for Colorado, netting a 5-year, $31.25 million deal.

The biggest blow to the Isles is undoubtedly Jason Blake’s defection to the Maple Leafs. The gifted forward landed a 5-year, $20M offer from Toronto and now has the chance to play with Mats Sundin and return the Leafs to their former glory.

The only other Isle to yet get and take an offer is Richard Zednik, gone to the Florida Panthers. The Miami-area club shored up many of their Restricted and Unrestricted Free Agents and is adding players like Radek Dvorak in an attempt to return to the form that got them to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1996.

The Devils took two huge free agency blows by losing Gomez to the Rangers and Brian Rafalski to the Red Wings. They’ve signed three of their six RFAs: Andy Greene, Johnny Oduya and Mike Rupp but they lost the aforesaid two, plus trusty blueliner Brad Lukowich to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
