Matt Martin’s Islanders career might not be over quite yet.

The Islanders are bringing Martin to training camp on a PTO, general manager Lou Lamoriello said Friday, giving him the chance to make the team and continue a decorated Islanders career.

“He’s a legitimate candidate [for the roster],” Lamoriello said. “He’s trained, we’ve spoken, he wants to play, and we’re totally up front and honest. We’ll have to get through training camp and make the best decision we can make at this time.”

Cal Clutterbuck, who played alongside Martin on the Identity Line and also became a free agent this summer, is not signing a PTO, meaning his time with the team appears to be over.

Martin faces an uphill battle to make the squad. The Islanders likely can only roster 22 players due to salary cap constraints, and that is the number of players they have on one-way deals.

Maxim Tsyplakov is signed to a two-way contract, but Lamoriello has said he expects the Russian to be in the NHL — and indeed, it would sort of defeat the purpose of bringing him over from the KHL if the Islanders were to stash him in Bridgeport.

That does not leave much space for Martin, unless the 35-year-old can force the organization into a tough decision.

The longtime Islander played 57 games last season, missing time due to injury and being made an occasional healthy scratch, scoring four goals with four assists.

His 9:19 average ice time was the lowest of any lineup regular, and Martin’s fourth-line role has never lent itself to strong advanced metrics.

Lamoriello acknowledged it was unlikely that Martin (or Clutterbuck) would be Islanders this coming season in a conversation with The Post last month, saying the club would “probably be moving on” from the pair of stalwarts.

It’s possible that a PTO will serve more as a chance for Martin to showcase himself to other clubs during the preseason than to put him into the contest for the Islanders’ roster.

Still, Martin’s history with the club, role in the dressing room and force of will mean he cannot be written off.

The competition for fourth-line playing time among Oliver Wahlstrom, Simon Holmstrom and Hudson Fasching is ripe for a party crasher.

Wahlstrom is on his second last-chance contract, Holmstrom’s game has been too inconsistent at the NHL level, and Fasching moved all over the lineup last season without ever establishing himself.

At a minimum, Martin’s presence will surely push that trio in camp. At most, he will push them right to the bench.
