The Rangers will win the Stanley Cup, according to EA Sports which used their NHL video game to run simulations of the 2013 playoffs.
The results had the Rangers winning their first title since 1994 by beating the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Blackhawks in six games. Brad Richards, who had struggled all season until the past few weeks, won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP with 24 points. Rick Nash had 14 goals for the Rangers, who beat the Capitals in seven games in the first round, the Penguins in seven games in the second round and the Canadiens in a four-game sweep in the Conference Finals.
How accurate are EA Sports simulations? This is the first time since 2010 that they ran simulations of every round at once, and that year, they correctly had the Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup. The past two seasons, they released simulations round by round. Last season, once the Stanley Cup final matchup was known, EA Sports did correctly pick the Kings to beat the Devils in six games, although they had the Kings losing in the first round prior to that. In 2011, EA simulations had the Bruins and Canucks meeting in the finals before the season began. And in 2010, in addition to correctly picking the Blackhawks to win the Stanley cup, they correctly predicted 13 of the 15 playoff matchups.
