FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette is no stranger to the NHL coaching merry-go-round.

The 60-year-old has been hired and fired five times, and there haven’t been any indications that the Rangers won’t become the sixth team to do so at the conclusion of this tragic 2024-25 campaign.

Reporting to an optional practice Sunday afternoon in Fort Lauderdale, Laviolette fielded a question about his job security for the second time this season.

“I think everything gets looked at when a year is not good like this,” he said. “I’m not blind to anything. I love being here with these guys and the New York Rangers. It’s a year where everything went right to a year where things didn’t go right. When things don’t go right, I’m sure everything gets looked at. I’m not naive. That being said, this is the place I want to be was New York City, the New York Rangers. It’s a great organization, great city, great family.

“It’s just tough right now, everybody’s faced with disappointment. Everybody I just mentioned is faced with disappointment today and I get that. There’s always things that are looked at.”

Entering the final two games of the season, Laviolette owns a 92-59-11 record at the helm of the Rangers. During Laviolette’s first season, the Rangers set franchise records for wins (55) and points (114) in a single season on the way to an Eastern Conference Final loss to the eventual Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers.

Laviolette last answered a question about remaining in his post in Nashville on Dec. 17, when the Rangers were 15-14-1 before losing to the then last-place Predators, 2-0.

“Those are things that I can’t control,” he said at the time. “I’ve been in this a long time.”
