A Rangers fan is really channeling the spirit of 1994, and turning to the New York Post for some help.
The ESPN broadcast caught a picture of a fan attending the Rangers’ Game 6 do-or die battle against the Panthers holding up an original copy of the 1994 Post edition of Mark Messier guaranteeing a win against the Devils before Game 6 of their Eastern Conference Finals.
Needless to say, the rest was history as the Rangers beat the Devils, 4-2, on the road in Game 6, and then beat New Jersey, 2-1, in double overtime on Stephane Matteau’s famous goal in double overtime.
A Rangers fan holds up The Post’s legendary back page of Mark Messier’s Game 6 guarantee in which he said the Rangers would beat the Devils. And the rest was history. @BR_OpenIce / XThese Rangers entered Game 6 facing the same situation the 2024 team faces now in this Eastern Conference Finals.
This series has played out the same way so far as that legendary series showdown, with the Rangers winning Games 2 and 3 and losing 1, 4 and 5.
The Rangers legendary captain told The Post’s Mark Cannizzaro on Friday that he believes this Blueshirts squad can follow the same script and move past the Panthers.
Now, this Rangers fan and all the Blueshirts supporters only could hope The Captain is correct, and that they could win Games 6 and 7 like Messier’s legendary group did.
But that didn’t happen after a 2-1 loss to the Panthers in Game 6, eliminating the Rangers despite a late goal from Artemi Panarin.
