The Rangers’ roaring strong start to the season was reduced to a whimper Friday evening when word spread that star defenseman Adam Fox will be placed on long-term injured reserve and second-line center Filip Chytil will be put on injured reserve, The Post has learned.

Both players exited the Blueshirts’ 2-1 win over the Hurricanes on Thursday, their sixth straight victory, in one of the more concerning injury scares the club has had in some time.

According to a source, goalie Igor Shesterkin was also a little banged up after the Carolina game, which led to the Rangers recalling Louis Domingue from AHL Hartford to back up Jonathan Quick against the Wild on Saturday.

The Rangers also called up center Jonny Brodzinski and defenseman Connor Mackey following the surge of injuries.

Additionally, the team announced that Barclay Goodrow will not play in Minnesota so that he can be with his wife for the birth of their son.

So there will be three key regulars — Shesterkin would be the fourth, but Quick was always scheduled to make the next start — missing from the Rangers’ lineup as they take on a spiraling Wild team Saturday.

Goodrow will presumably return to the team shortly after this one-game road trip and there doesn’t appear to be any major concern about Shesterkin.

As for Fox and Chytil, however, it is just the first contest they will miss.

On LTIR, Fox will miss at least 10 games and 24 days of the season, meaning the 2021 Norris Trophy winner won’t be able to return until the last game this month Nov. 29 against Detroit.

On IR, Chytil will be unable to play for a minimum of seven days after the date of the injury.

The earliest the center can return is Nov. 12 against the Blue Jackets.

By placing Fox on LTIR, the Rangers freed up the value of his contract in LTIR pool funds at $9.5 million.

This allowed them to make as many recalls as they did while also having Chytil’s cap hit continue to count.

It is unclear if the Rangers plan to make a major move to use this cap space.

If Fox returns at any point this season, that LTIR space is no longer there.

Plus, the Rangers probably don’t want to carry 23 players and halt the cap space accrual process in preparation for the trade deadline March 8.

Sitting in first place in the Metropolitan Division, the Rangers may have just passed their biggest test with a win over the Hurricanes, their strongest opponent of the season thus far.

Losing Fox and Chytil, however, will be a different challenge entirely.

Taking out a key ingredient of the Rangers’ red-hot power play and top defensive pair, as well as the center of the club’s most effective offensive line at five-on-five, there is bound to be shock and a forced adjustment.

Adversity comes in all different shapes and sizes throughout the season, but the Blueshirts have been so fortunate in the injury department over the past few years that this will be new territory.

The Resilient Rangers will have to show up Saturday and continue to do so for the next month.

This is when a team finds out what it’s really made of.
