Tony DeAngelo has hit the waiver wire.

The Rangers placed the defenseman on waivers Sunday, the team announced, a day after DeAngelo was on the ice for four goals against in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Penguins.

DeAngelo was not skating with the Rangers during their practice Sunday afternoon, as a mix of Brendan Smith, Anthony Bitetto and Libor Hajek made up their third defensive pairing.

Coach David Quinn declined to get into specifics when asked if the decision to waive DeAngelo was strictly performance-based.

“It’s a decision we made as an organization,” Quinn said Sunday after practice. “In 24 hours, we’ll be able to probably be a little bit more specific and address the situation differently.”

Quinn was also asked about rumors on social media that an incident involving DeAngelo may have happened after Saturday night’s game. The Post’s Larry Brooks later confirmed DeAngelo and goalie Alex Georgiev had a physical altercation after the loss.

“There’s always rumors, so I’m not going to address rumors,” Quinn said. “This isn’t about one incident, it’s not about one thing. This is a situation the organization felt was best at this current time. We’ll see how the situation plays out.”

Quinn had benched DeAngelo, 25, for the second game of the season after he had taken a third-period unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for slamming the penalty box door and yelling at referees after getting hit with a holding penalty. He sat out the next game as well before getting back into the lineup for the last five games.

DeAngelo, whom the Rangers gave a two-year, $9.6 million contract to in October, played 20:28 on Saturday night while paired with Smith, who was benched for the entire third period.

“Things happen in pro sports and that was a decision the organization made,” Quinn said. “We’ll see how the waiver situation plays out.”
