The Rangers made another move involving one of their veteran forwards, placing winger Tyler Pitlick on waivers Tuesday, according to multiple reports, one day after Adam Edstrom skated in his spot on the fourth line — with Pitlick a healthy scratch — during their 2-0 win against the Flames.
Pitlick, 32, signed a one-year deal worth $787,500 with the Rangers, and he skated in 34 games while recording four points and spending the bulk of his minutes alongside Jimmy Vesey and Barclay Goodrow.
It’s not the first time the Rangers have waived one of their veteran forwards this season, either.
Before the All-Star break, the team waived Nick Bonino, who decided he didn’t want to report to AHL Hartford and was ultimately released after clearing unconditional waivers.
This time, the Rangers’ roster decision should open up more ice time for Edstrom, a 6-foot-7 winger who logged his second NHL game Monday.
It also helps, to a degree, with their salary-cap situation ahead of next month’s trade deadline.
The Rangers put veteran Tyler Pitlick on waivers. USA TODAY Sports via Reuters ConEdstrom scored in his NHL debut Dec. 15 against the Ducks, and in 25 games with the Wolf Pack this season, he scored eight goals and added two assists.
In the Rangers’ win against the Flames, he logged 9:23 of ice time with a unit that has turned into the team’s go-to checking line against opponents — especially in recent victories against the Lightning and Avalanche.
“I thought [Edstrom] was good,” head coach Peter Laviolette said after Monday’s game. “He’s a big guy that just skates so well. His stick is big, and even in practice [Sunday] you could see him moving up and down the ice. He skates with ease.
“I like his physicality. I like his awareness. He was a player that played good defense [in Hartford]. He killed penalties. Eventually, we’ll start to work him into different scenarios, but there wasn’t anything in the game that made me feel like he couldn’t play in the last five, six minutes of the game.”
When Edstrom was called up Sunday, the Rangers also brought along 6-8 winger Matt Rempe, who practiced with the team, skated his rookie lap and was a healthy scratch.
The Blueshirts assigned him to Hartford on Tuesday, and waiving Pitlick leaves 12 forwards — and one extra player in defenseman Zac Jones — on the NHL roster.

The Rangers will have a chance to match their longest winning streak of the season Thursday against the Canadiens, and according to Laviolette, they’re “working toward” getting the rhythm — and, more importantly, the production and the results — back from the start of the season.
Their power play still hasn’t scored in seven games (0-for-17) and the offense still hasn’t generated goals like earlier in the season, but the Blueshirts haven’t allowed an opponent to score more than two goals in regulation in seven of their past nine games.
“There’s always these peaks and valleys inside the season,” Laviolette said Monday. “It also goes with wins and losses, so it was nice to put a stop to it with regard to that. We started putting some wins together where we’re building something now and having a much better February than we did January.”
