Captain J.T. Miller, out since Dec. 20 with an upper-body injury, is expected to be available for the Rangers game Thursday against the Sabres “barring anything out of the ordinary,” head coach Mike Sullivan said after practice Wednesday. Miller practiced fully again — on the first line and the first power-play unit — after shedding a non-contact jersey late last week.

“We need everybody,” center Vincent Trocheck said. “Losing two guys like [Shesterkin and Fox] hurts. Getting a guy back like J.T., obviously, it makes it a little bit less painful.”

Miller had collected 10 goals and 22 points across 35 games before absorbing a hit from the Flyers’ Nick Seeler, landing on injured reserve and missing the Rangers’ seven games since. Six of those goals and 13 of those points occurred across his past 15 games, helping the 32-year-old overcome a slow start that mirrored the scoring struggles of the Blueshirts. Miller also missed two games with an upper-body injury at the end of November.

“I mean, that’s our captain,” Mika Zibanejad said. “One of our top players obviously, too. So it means a lot. It means a lot for us to have him back, and he means so much for us on and off the ice. I’m happy he’s back battling with us.”

It was a telling quote from Sullivan. The Rangers’ top power-play unit has operated without Trocheck for an extended stretch this season. Without Miller and Fox, too. And just as the Blueshirts were about to get Miller back, they lost Fox again.

So now they’ll need to adjust once more — and find a way to sustain some of their recent success. After stumbling without Fox during his first lengthy absence, the Rangers went 5-for-8 with a league-best 62.5 clip since he returned Dec. 31, according to the team. They finally clicked with their dynamic defenseman running the point again.

At times during Fox’s initial absence, the Rangers opted to use a five-forward approach with their top line, and that was ineffective. They opted to have defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov replace Fox with the first unit and have defenseman Scott Morrow — who was recalled from AHL Hartford on Tuesday and who had a brief audition with the top power-play line last month — take Gavrikov’s spot Wednesday.

“There’s been a lot of different looks on that top power-play unit,” Sullivan said. “It seems like every time we get it going pretty good, somebody goes down on it, and we’ve gotta figure it out. That’s part of it. So we’re gonna figure it out.”

Winger Alexis Lafrenière (illness) didn’t practice Wednesday. … Center Noah Laba, who’s week-to-week with an upper-body injury, practiced with the team while wearing a red non-contact jersey. … Sullivan will get a second chance at securing the 500th win of his career Thursday.
