tRY IT NOWVincent Trocheck was placed on long-term injured reserve Wednesday with an upper-body injury, so the Rangers will be without him until at least Nov. 1 against Seattle.
Trocheck had been considered week-to-week after suffering the injury against Buffalo last Thursday, and the IR move is retroactive to Saturday, the first game he missed.
Trocheck’s absence has no doubt played a part in the Rangers’ scoring woes, as they’ve been shut out in back-to-back games at Madison Square Garden.
He was second in goals on the team a year ago and though the Rangers have had plenty of scoring chances in their most recent two losses, they’ve been unable to find the back of the net, becoming the first team in NHL history to fail to score in their first three home games.
Without Trocheck, Mika Zibanejad moved up to the top line alongside Alexis Lafrenière and Artemi Panarin.
“I think we tried to create a little bit of balance in his absence,’’ coach Mike Sullivan said of moving up Zibanejad after Troucheck’s injury. “I think Mika has played extremely well in the middle. He’s had a really strong start to the season and could easily have three or four goals, and maybe we wouldn’t be having this conversation [about not scoring for three straight games at MSG]. That’s the fine line we walk as a coaching staff, trying to make sure we send the right message.’’

“It hurts having him out,’’ Lafrenière said. “He’s one of our best players. We’ve been good without him, but we could be better.”

Especially on defense, where Sullivan said he’d like to see the group improve.
“We try to work with those guys on the defensive side of the puck and ensure it doesn’t turn into a chance-for-chance game, because we don’t think that’s a recipe for success,’’ Sullivan said. “They had a fair amount of looks [at the net]. I think we can help them improve on the defensive side of the puck, just making sure there’s more honesty in their game. That makes us harder to play against.’’
Vincent Trocheck was injured during the Rangers’ win over the Sabres on Oct. 9, 2025. Timothy T. Ludwig-Imagn ImagesThe Rangers are also dealing with another injury issue, as Will Borgen didn’t practice Wednesday due to a lower body injury.
Scott Morrow was called up from AHL Hartford in case Borgen can’t play in Toronto on Thursday.
Sullivan said Borgen was being evaluated Wednesday, and Morrow would only play if Borgen can’t play Thursday.
Asked about Borgen’s potential availability against the Maple Leafs, Sullivan said, “I’m not sure either way.”
