Jeremy Roenick reportedly text messaged the Philadelphia Inquirer his intent to retire.

“I’m retiring; is that still news?” said a story posted Wednesday to the paper’s web site.

If the report of his retirement is true, Roenick will finish his career third on the list of American goal scorers. He’s five shy of 500, and seven behind Joey Mullen. Mike Modano is first among American players with 507 goals.

JR broke onto the scene as the Blackhawks 8th pick from 1988 draft. He played on the Chicago squad that was swept by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992. It was his only finals appearance.
