As reported here first Nov. 18, former Devil and Ranger Brendan Shanahan is expected to be named to an executive post in the NHL shortly.
Shanahan was effectively cut by the Devils Oct. 1, after re-signing with them in August. He joined New Jersey for the final 34 games and playoffs last season, signing January 15, and was impressively effective, 6-8-14 in a limited role. He appeared to still have plenty to offer besides his 21 years of experience this season, but the Devils decided to trend towards youth. When the Devils finally assigned him to Lowell to clear his roster spot, he did not report, and the Devils terminated his $1 million contract, without paying him anything.
Shanahan retired last month, and stopped being the NHL’s leading active goal-scorer with 698, which places him 11th on the all-time list. He was picked second overall by New Jersey in 1987, jumped as a restricted free agent to St. Louis in 1991, when Lou Lamoriello fought to gain Scott Stevens as compensation. He played for Hartford and won three Stanley Cups with the Red Wings before signing with the Rangers, playing two seasons on Broadway before rejoining the Devils.
